This has led to a patient market that requires highly customized manufacturing of implants and devices. 3D scanning and printing of dental prosthetics greatly reduces the chances of bad prosthetic fits and remanufacturing of customized. It also reduces time and cost of the customized prosthetics. 3D scanners are devices that use lasers or structured light to scan oral cavity or dental molds to create digital 3D models that are highly accurate. These digital models can then be printed by 3D printers and mills to create implants of several dental materials including ceramics, metal and polymers. 3D scanners are used for veneers, bridges, dental implant restorations, cosmetic procedures, crowns, crown lays, inlays and onlays, dentures (removable or fixed), and other orthodontic appliances. SA-BRC analysts forecast the 3D scanners market to grow from US$ 647.8 million in 2015 to US$ 917.7 million by 2020 at a CAGR of 7.2% from 2016 to 2020. The concept of 3D printing began with development of multi-axial robots that could manufacture products from a single block of material such as metals and ceramics. Additive or reductive 3D manufacturing was not possible without three dimensional scanning of the object that is to be reproduced. The 3D scanners are devices that use laser or structured light source to scan an object from multiple axes and reproduce the image on a computer system. Together, this system is also known as computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM).
This report focuses on four different types of 3D scanners such as IntraOral 3D Scanners, Desktop/Lab 3D Scanners, Hand-Held or Portable 3D Scanners and Cone Beam CT 3D Scanners. Intraoral scanners comprise of a wand like probe that is inserted into the mouth of the patient. Intraoral scanners acquire images of the oral cavity which is then rendered as a real-time 3D image in a computer using CAD/CAM software. These devices are similar to intraoral cameras but deliver a much more powerful output in terms of 3D rendered images for creating implants. a small number of extra oral handheld 3D scanners. These devices provide the flexibility to be moved from one place to another and are used more as lab scanners for scanning models or casts of dental impressions. Desktop or laboratory based dental 3D scanners are box-like devices comprising of laser or structured light source, a rotating multi-axial base on which dental moulds are placed for creating 3D digital models. Dental laboratories commonly purchase desktop/lab 3D scanners along with 3D printers or milling stations for putting a standard CAD/CAM system process. Cone beam computed tomography 3D scanners are the only type of dental 3D scanners using x-rays to provide images. Dental cone beam computed tomography (CT) is a special type of x-ray equipment used when regular dental or facial x-rays are not sufficient. Dental 3D CBCT scanner can give three dimensional (3-D) images of the teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways and bone in a single scan.
There are three end-users of dental 3D scanners analyzed in this report; Hospitals, Dental Clinics and Research & Academic Institutions. The dental 3D scanners are most prominently used by dentists and to a large degree by dental certified CAD/CAM laboratories. In recent years, the technology has been reducing at the laboratory side and increasing at the chair-side. Miniaturization of devices, ease of use has enabled dentists to reduce cost to send 3D printing and casting to dental laboratories. However, since milling and 3D printing systems are capital intensive, not many dental practitioners are yet game for installing chairside CAD/CAM systems.
Major trends that manufacturers should anticipate are the growing market for 3D scanners in economically developing countries, increasing adoption and penetration of dental CAD/CAM technology among dentists and dental institutions, increasing installation of complete chairside CAD/CAM systems. With miniaturization of technology, mobile dental clinics are also anticipated to become a growing trend.
